Boom Shaka was a popular music group from South Africa that mostly made Kwaito music. The group consisted of Junior Sokhela, Lebo Mathosa, Theo Nhlengethwa, and Thembi Seete. Boom Shaka became one of the most successful bands of the mid to late 90s in South Africa and their music became popular amongst the youths in South Africa. Their unique groovy kwaito style was able to break them into the international market and helped them achieved success outside of South Africa, especially London.

South African music producer, Don Laka started his own record label and put together a group, containing a DJ, Junior Sokhela, Theo Nhlengethwa, and Prophets of Da City. This formed the early version of Boom Shaka. Then came the two female power-house, Lebo Mathosa, and Thembi Seete to complete the group. Boom Shaka's first single It's About Time was released in 1993. Their first album was produced in 1994. The album was an instant success.

Boom Shaka was purposefully put together to appeal to a youth audience by presenting a new sound and a new style. Boom Shaka is known for creating popular and distinctive kwaito dance moves such as Chop di Grass. The dance pays homage to the men who mow the grass during the construction of highways in South Africa.

Despite their booming positivity, Boom Shaka have stirred up controversies with the fashion and dance moves, as a part of the masses have found it degrading as regards to female sexuality. Simultaneously, many have seen it as an empowerment movement and a great power-play for the feminist movement in South Africa.

Their big break came with the release of their debut single, It's About Time.
