Tiwa was born & bred in Lagos, and graduated from the University of Kent in the UK with a degree in business administration and accounts. Armed with the degree, Tiwa continued to pursue her first love, and when she got the call to sing backup for Mary J. Blige— decided to forego accounting to focus on music full-time.
As a backup singer, Tiwa Savage has toured with international acclaimed artists such as Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, George Michael, Emma Bunton (Spice Girls), Blu Cantrell, Kelly Clarkson to name a few.
In 2006 she participated in the UK’s X-Factor and made it to the Top 24 while she was attending school for her 2nd degree at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where she received a scholarship to study music from which she graduated in 2007. Since 2007 she has worked with notable producers such as Black Eyed Peas drummer Keith Harris, Oak Warren Felder (Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown), Babyface and many others.
An avid songwriter since the age of 15, Tiwa is signed to Sony ATV as a songwriter. She co-wrote the track “Collard greens and Cornbread” on Fantasia’s Grammy nominated album “Back to me”, Monica’s “New Life” and also has background vocal credits on Whitney Houston’s album “I look to you.”
In 2010 upon releasing her debut single “kele Kele” Tiwa set up her own label imprint, 323 Entertainment with her manger Tunji “TJ Billz” Balogun, as she embarked on a solo career
Two years since her debut on the local music scene she has been nominated for several awards, including but not limited to 2012 Headies – HipHop World Awards (Best Female Vocalist, Best R & B single) & 2012 Channel O Music Awards (Female Video of the year, Most Gifted R&B music video of the Year).
In December 2011 she co-hosted Nigerian Idol Season II alongside Illrymz and acted alongside Nollywood heavyweights Joke Silva and Ireti Doyle in the stage adaptation of “For Coloured Girls”.
In early 2012, 323 Entertainment teamed up with Super producer Don Jazzy’s label Mavin Records and was featured on the label’s debut compilation album. Tiwa is now pronounced the 1st Lady of the Mavin Records
Of recent, Tiwa secured an endorsement deal with Pepsi – making her the first African female artist to be associated with the Pepsi brand.
“Once Upon A Time” her highly anticipated debut album was released on the 3rd of July 2013 with rave reviews
In an interview in 2010 Tiwa expressed that, she has learned that having a full life means fusing all aspects of it—from music to business to charity. To that end she has been involved in many youth empowerment and breast cancer screening projects as well as her own organizations.
