Maya Christinah Xichavo Wegerif popularly known as Sho Madjozi, is a South African rapper, singer, songwriter, actress, and poet. Her unique Pan-African style of rapping has helped her carve a niche in the industry. She incorporates the Tsonga culture through her music and public image.

Madjozi was born on the 9th of May 1992 in Shirley Village, Elim, Limpopo to her mother, Rosemary Xichavo, and her father Marc Wegerif, who is of European descent (Sweden).  Her father traveled regularly in particular regions of the continent and Sho had opportunities to travel with him. She followed him to Tanzania, where he worked for the charitable organization Oxfam while she was a teenager. Maya spent several years in Tanzania. She has also lived in Senegal too. After graduating high school in Tanzania, Maya was offered a scholarship to Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts to study creative writing and African studies. While in the US, she started writing poems under a pen name of Maya The Poet. When she completed her degree, Maya moved back to South Africa and furthered her studies at the University of South Africa, Johannesburg. That was when she started composing and rapping under her stage name, Sho Madjozi.

Madjozi’s big break came after her collaboration with rapper Okmalumkoolkat on the track Ngiyashisa Bhe and the hit single Gqi. She released her first single, Dumi HiPhone, in April 2017. The song featured electronic dance duo PS DJz.  One year later she dropped one of her biggest hits to date, Huku. The track was the lead single off her debut album, Limpopo Champions League. The album was released in December 2018. Sho Madjzoi won "Best Newcomer" and "Best Female Artist" at the 2019 South African Music Awards (SAMAs).
